Freedom.
It's something many Americans celebrate during the month of July, usually corresponding with our Declaration of Independence Day, July 4. Many honor the real reason behind the day off from work, but many view it as a day to barbeque, go to the lake, get drunk, and maybe watch some fireworks.
As I watch many of our freedoms dissolve for a variety of reasons, I like to think the Founders--the Thomas Jeffersons, James Madisons, George Washingtons, John Hancocks--would be appalled at the state of American "freedom" in 2011. Our "freedom" allows millions of innocent babies to be murdered every year. Our "freedom" is being told we must purchase health insurance. Our "freedom" demands more than 25% of our paychecks every year.
I could go on.

I'm not making an exception simply because the ChristianWriters.com blog chain topic is Freedom for July. I am continually bothered by the freedoms that are being encroached on day in and day out. Because I don't want to get legally groped at an airport, I don't fly any more. I've been threatening to get my private pilot's license for years, and if I had the dinero to do so, I'd have it.
Freedom is something to be treasured. It should be something honored, and others shouldn't trample on it, whether they be for so-called "good" reasons or not. As Americans, we should fight all efforts to thwart our freedoms, whether they be from Islamic terrorists or from members of congress. When freedom is gone, we perish. To thrive as a people, as a nation, we need to be free.
As a mother, I want to leave my kids freer than I feel I am now. It would be the greatest gift I can give to them.

The continual loss of our freedoms is a constant source of concern for me, too. Most people in the US are ungrateful for what they have, they want government to be their nanny, naively unaware it leave the door wide open for a dictator to come in. Any responsible leader is ridiculed, hated, lied about, and perhaps forced out of office. (The latter hasn't happened yet, but I see the day coming.)
If only they knew they're playing right into Satan's hands! If only they had even a small amount of the Founding Fathers' belief system that set up the Constitution.
Okay, end of rant.

Liberty, I'm glad that you shared your thoughts on this. We just finished a 2-part series at church titled "God and Country" ... about the erosion of our national conscience... and I've been thinking a lot about the similarities to ancient Israel. Thanks !!
Liberty-loved your rant!!! It's time to put an end to this politically correct atmosphere and start acting like Americans!! It took at lot of courage for our founders to do what they did to ensure liberty for future generations-but most people stand around with their hands in their pockets shrugging their shoulders saying "what ya gonna do?" Our government exists only for our protection and to insure our rights are upheld-yet "we the people" are silenced. Thank you for your voice and I adding mine as well- God help us.

I've forgotten who said it, but the message is that democracy works until special interest groups learn they can manipulate the legislators to get what they want. I fear we're living through the demise of the greatest nation the earth has ever seen. Peace and Blessings
It's very instructive to take a look back at the founders of this country and to see who they were and how faith was an elemental part of many of their lives. What's odd nowadays, though, is that freedoms are being taken away piece by piece...in the name of "keeping you safe".
@Victor, couldn't agree more. People really don't have an understanding of history. As Rush Limbaugh says, "People's knowledge of history starts the day they were born."

@E.G., I've not heard that, but I agree with the sentiment. I've worked in the Kansas Legislature before, and it's eye-opening to see the number of lobbyists that are there continually. I think if I ever were in the legislature, I'd have a standing policy of taking no lobbyists. Period. Even if their cause is near and dear to my heart.
@MGalloway, You got that right. I'd love to tell the government to get their nose out of my business. I'll get a couple guns and I'll keep me safe!

I love the statement that freedom is something to be treasured. So true
You stated my own concerns regarding our dissolving freedoms, thank you for that. The most painful fact is that so many don't realize (or simply don't believe) we are being unjustly treated. "It's for your own good and protection!" they tell us. Well, excuse me, but my protection is not the government's concern. The Feds are to concern themselves with what is going on outside our borders, and not within my skin.

@Nona, I'm glad I could reinforce your own thoughts. While I'm not a registered libertarian, I tend to lean that way most of the time. I believe most of the Founders probably would have been libertarians as well since they had a view that limited government.
Sometimes y'gotta just let the passion out . . . especially when it's your namesake that's being violated. I've managed to remain fairly rantless to this point, even as bad as things have been getting; but I may one of these days have a little eruption myself. Things aren't as they have been, and aren't as they should be.
Don't ever be afraid to speak your mind, Liberty. That's one freedom I hope we never come close to losing — and it's useless unless we exercise it.

Liberty, I love your passion and heart to leave this country better than it is now for our children. Yet as much as I treasure, and too often take for granted, my freedom as an American, I wonder, why me? Why was I born here -- free -- in America? So many millions live unimaginably hard lives. Why them and not me? How much freedom is mine to defend? For wherever we are, whatever our circumstances, we are each only truly, eternally free in Christ. Interesting to puzzle through.
